Mineral Identification

 

Read the following two websites about the physical properites used to identify minerals:

http://www.uky.edu/KGS/rocksmn/methods.htm (easy to understand definitions)

http://earthsci.org/mineral/rockmin/mineral/mineral_i_d.html (helpful photos)

 

1. Write a definition for the following properties:

a) cleavage

b) lustre

c) streak colour

d) mineral colour

e) hardness

f) effervescence (or acid test)

g) magnetism

h) density

 

2. Use the interactive "mineral identification key" provided (http://www.cdaschools.org/lakes/clind/mineral%20id%20key/page1.htm) in order to find the missing mineral names in the following table:
