Homework: Recipe Conversions & Exchange Rates          Name: ____________________

1.      Here is a recipe for a cake serving 6 people.

Modify this recipe to make a cake serving 8 people.

- 3 eggs

- 150 ml sugar

- 120 ml oil

- 300 g nuts

- 360 ml flour

- 30 ml baking soda

2.      The following list of ingredients is for an easy chili recipe. The recipe on the left serves 5 people. The recipe on the right serves an unknown number of people.

a)     Convert the measurements so that each ingredient is measured using the same units in both recipes (allowing you to make comparisons between them).

b)     Determine how many people the recipe on the right will serve.

***Hint:          1 oz. = 28.35 g      and         1 kg = 1000 g

5 servings

? servings

  • 455 g ground beef
  • 14.5 oz. canned diced tomatoes
  • 15 oz. kidney beans, drained
  • 1.25 oz. package of chili seasoning mix
  • 1.1 kg ground beef
  • 986.6 g canned diced tomatoes
  • 1 kg kidney beans, drained
  • 85 g package of chili seasoning mix

3.      As of the morning of November 27, 2008, 1 Canadian dollar (CDN$) was worth 0.631824 Euros (€).

This exchange rate looks like this:

                       CDN$ 1 = € 0.631824

Tamara wants to travel around Europe where the currency is in Euros. If she exchanges $3000 of her money into Euros, how many Euros will she get?

4.   An exchange rate can be written in two different ways. For example, the exchange rate between the American and Canadian dollar on November 25, 2008 can be written as

A:    US$1 = CDN$1.2250

or

B:    CDN$1 = US$0.8163

These two rates are equivalent to each other, but they are expressed differently.

If you were to buy the book Twilight on Amazon.com it would cost US$6.04.

Demonstrate that you can use both expressions of the exchange rate above (A & B) in order to calculate the cost of the book in Canadian dollars (both answers should be equal).
