ROCK TYPES

Read this website about the 3 different types of rocks: http://www.geography4kids.com/files/earth_rocktypes.html

Copy these notes onto looseleaf BY HAND to be submitted next class:

Igneous
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
Meaning of Name:
“fire” – Latin: ignis
Made up of material called sediments
“change form” in Greek
Formation:
Solidification of hot liquid magma from volcanoes.
Accumulation & cementing of sedimentary deposits over time. The sediments are created by weathering (gravity, water, wind . . . )
Intense heat & pressure deep inside the earth changes rocks from one type to another.
Special Types:
a)Intrusive: liquid magma cools slowly under the earth’s surface.
eg. Granite
b) Extrusive: liquid magma cools quickly on the earth’s surface
eg. Basalt, rhyolite, obsidian, pumice
a)Detrital / Clastic: made of pieces of other rocks
eg. Sandstone, shale
b)Organic: made from plant & animal remains
eg. Coral, chalk, limestone
c) Chemical: made when a solid solute is extracted from a liquid solvent through evaporation
eg. Gypsumhalite (rock salt)
a)Contact: change caused by nearby hot magma (heat)
eg. Quartzite, marble
b)Regional: caused by movement of tectonic plates (pressure)
eg. Schist, gneiss, slate
